FIRST GRADE NEWS – SALLY HUTT – TECUMSEH SITE

Greetings from First Grade! It’s hard to believe that we are beginning the fourth week of school this week! It’s fun to look back and see what all we’ve accomplished. Just remember, before First Grade, most students had not had a desk to manage. Having ownership of one’s own crayons, sketch pad, reading book, two folders, pencils, erasers, glue, pencil box and an assortment of other school supplies can be a challenge to a young person in the beginning. We also follow a pretty rigid schedule during a given day and most students plan their activities accordingly. First thing in the morning each student is expected to hand in their homework, get their own stickers for homework and begin any warm-up activity that might be on their desk and make all corrections to work on their desk from the day before. All the above activities help First Graders become more responsible and the owner of their own work.
This quarter, we will refine our spelling, reading and writing skills. We will read longer stories, spell more difficult words, with the help of our phonograms and write longer, more detailed sentences and paragraphs.
In Math, we will continue to memorize our math facts and related subtraction facts, work in telling time to the half hour, continue to measure with inches and centimeters, count all kinds of coins, be involved in building graphs, and interpreting them, and generally become more familiar with all numbers 0-100.
We will celebrate our planet Earth next month, by learning about trees and Nebraska’s own Arbor Day and learn about reusing, recycling, and reducing the amount of resources we use. We will also learn about the characteristics of many Nebraska birds. Please point out aspects of nature to your children. They will be more interested in and appreciative of the world around them.
